Donald P. Tashkin, MD – Medical Director of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory, Professor of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles.

After 25 years of research, here are the study’s
Summery & Conclusions:
* Habitual marijuana smoking is ociated with:
- Symptoms of acute and chronic bronchitis
- Evidence of microscopic injury to bronchial lining cells.
- Inconsistant evidence of mild airway obstruction.
* but NOT with an accelerated decline in lung function.
- Thus unlikely to be ociated with the development of clinically significant COPD.

* In a large, prospectively designed population-based case-control study:
- We did NOT observe a positive ociation of marijuana use – even after heavy long-term use, with either lung or UAT cancer, controlling for tobacco use and other possible confounders.
- In marked contrast, we confirmed the strong dose-dependent effect of tobacco use on the occurence of these cancers.”

The new ads play off concepts created for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) for a men’s health campaign that was launched last month. The ads will debut this week on ESPN media.

Men are 25 percent less likely than women to have visited the doctor within the past year and are 38 percent more likely than women to have neglected their cholesterol tests. (Source: AHRQ Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, 2005). Furthermore, men are 1.5 times more likely than women to die from heart disease, cancer and chronic lower respiratory diseases (Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2005).

He was diagnosed on Father’s Day, 2004, with lung cancer. he was a lifetime smoker, but quit in 1992. DR said if he had quit long before (or never started)…he would be here today…My dad was a talented writer and news broadcaster. He was very silly, sometimes eccentric, as you will see…We miss you, Dad…

ANYONE that considers smoking…needs to know that the chance of being diagnosed and then dying of lung cancer is a strong possibility. Please, I don’t want anyone to go through the fear, frustration, and pain that my dad went through.,.not to mention the family having to WATCH him go through it. We stood by helplessly as he tried to “catch” his breath, couldn’t swallow because the radiation made his throat sore, coughed up blood, and later heard the imfamous “death rattle” as he tried to breathe. The waiting was the worst…Please , see video #2 for additional comments. SEMPER FI!

China is home to the world’s largest smoking population, and the country is facing a serious health crisis. A recent report warns that tens of millions of people in China will die from respiratory illnesses and lung cancer over the next 25 years if nothing is done to reduce smoking.

Experts predict there will be 65 million deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 18 million deaths from lung cancer in China between 2003 and 2033.

Respiratory diseases are already among the 10 leading causes of deaths
in China.

According the World Health Organisation, one out of every three cigarettes lit in the world is in China.
Ma Guanghua, a migrant worker in Beijing, says smoking has become a part of his life.

[Ma Guanghua, Migrant Worker]:
“Of course I want to quit, but I have been smoking for so many years that it is so difficult for me to give up.”

Feng Xiaodong is seeking treatment for a lung problem at a hospital for respiratory diseases in Beijing.

[Feng Xiaodong, Hospital Patient]:
“It’s your surroundings. Because everyone smokes, if you’re the only one who doesn’t, it feels a bit uncomfortable. It’s mostly the surroundings you’re in.”

Out of the army of smokers in China, Ma and Feng are exceptions. While 45 and 50 percent of men in urban and rural areas were regular smokers in 2003, the report states only 5-6 percent of them tried to quit.

Researchers warn that the burden of treating smoking-related diseases is likely to be heavy for China, and the country will suffer reduced productivity.

If present smoking trends continue, 100 million Chinese men will die of smoking-related ailments between 2000 and 2050.

Family members of patients suffering from lung diseases say information on the dangers of smoking is hard to come by.

[Mrs. Li, Wife of Smoker]:
“Smoking is definitely bad for your health. But I think in society there’s still not enough publicity about the dangers of smoking. In particular, it seems that there is still very little educational information,
and when we searched online there wasn’t much either.”

Some surveys show two-thirds of Chinese people think smoking does little or no harm.
