puppy has respiratory disease and diarrhea?

i took my puppy to the vet because he was not eating that much and has had diarrhea for a week now and also some breathing problems and the vet said that he has a upper respiratory disease and told us to feed him rice and gave us anti bio tics what is upper respiratory disease..is it severe
