Does my guinea pig have an upper respiratory disease?

March 7th, 2010 | by admin |

One of my guinea pig keeps sneezing. I see her sneeze about 3 or 4 times a day and some times she even wipes her nose, but I don’t see anything on her nose. Her eyes are crystal clear and I can’t hear any heart problems. Does she have an upper respiratory disease or is she just cold or possible have an allergy? I use care fresh not wood though.

I am going to have to say she most definitely has an upper respiratory infection. The wiping her nose is the give away. My little boy Hoshi had an upper respiratory infection and for 6 weeks that is all he did, but until he stooped sneezing all together he had to stay on antibiotics, the poor baby was on them for 8 weeks total. He appeared quite normal other than sneezing a few times a day, i have to admit i though the vet was wrong, i really had began to think he just had allergies, i was wrong, not the vet. Please get him to an EXOTIC vet asap so he will get on the proper meds. as guinea pigs are so sensitive to medications, the exotic vet has gone to extra schooling to specialize in guinea pigs and it is a very difficult medicine. General vets just do not have the knowledge to properly treat guinea pigs. The medicine that will cure your cat and dog will kill your guinea pig. It is very hard to find the antibiotic that will kill the bacteria and not the guinea pig. With Hoshi we had to change meds i believe it was 3 times.

I say that he/she just has an allergy; my previous pig had the same thing and he was allergic to dust. You would need to worry if it starts to breathe heavily, become less active and refuses to eat…if those symptoms develop seek medical help immediately .

Try holding your guinea pig close to your ear, and listen to its breathing. If you hear a clicking sound when it breaths then it most likely has an upper respiratory infection. Take him to the vet to get medicine.

I work at a pet store and have owned three guinea pigs. (Two had upper respiratory infections when I got them.)
