Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease?

October 13th, 2009 | by admin |

Hi

About 5 years ago I had an accident which resulted in my lung collapsing, I was in hospital for a week whilst they drained the fluid from my lung. Every year since then when the weather gets cold I suffer from very bad chest infections I get 2-3 from October to January and they last about 2 weeks a time. On Sunday I woke with a cough and early hours Monday morning I was very hard of breathing and I was having terrible coughing fits and wheasing vey badly. I went to the doctors at 10:30 and by 11:00 I was in hospital. The doctors said I was having an acute asma attack. I was treated with Nebulizers, seriods, antibiotics, and inhalers. I was discharged yesterday being told that I have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease & acute asma and will need physio etc etc. Although I have always suffered from chest infections I have never had any thing wrong with my breathing and I’m a little scared now as I’m unsure what it all means. I can’t even wash my own hair at the moment, will it get better?? Any help or advise will be gratefully received. Thank you

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) can be 1 of 4 chronic lung diseases. They are either Asthma, Emphysema, Chronic Pneumonia or Chronic Bronchitis. What the word Acute means is simply something that started all of the sudden. Which is what happened to you. What asthma is is inflammation of your airways where air cannot get through since the airway is swollen. am guessing you can’t wash your hair right now due to it will put you out of breathe. Did your doctor prescribe you a nebulizer for home? a rescue inhaler? You just need to find out what is the best meds for you. Keep your home clean, dust free, furry animals washed daily, and the temperature of your home warm and wear a clean, washed scarf around your mouth and nose when you go out to warm your air you breath in since the cold is a huge culprit to you. I wish you the best I know it is terrifying.

I have had asthma my whole life. You can’t exhale enough old air to get fresh air in. It is a lung disease that will affect you in many different ways. You may get wheezy from walking, running, perfume, pollen, odors change in temperature, humidity etc. Dry cool air is the best..I take advair and use proventil for my asthma. I take allegra and singulair for my allergies. It is controllable and manageable with correct care.

hi tonya i recently was diagnosed with copd. the doctors said it was from years of smoking i am only 37. they referred me to a lung specialist which i could not afford. they sent me home with steroids and a nebulizer it cleared up in about a week. although i still have trouble breathing.it is not as bad. i use my inhaler about every two weeks. i find myself getting short winded after strenous work. there is no cure for it. but it can be managed. doctors said if i didn’t quit smoking i would be on oxygen in 5 years . hope this helps.

You can get better. It is now recognized that persons with breathing problems can benefit from "rehabilitation." Typically this will involve teaching you how to improve your lung function and capacity with breathing techniques and exercises. They should also teach you how to properly use your medications and inhalers to get the most benefit.

You did not state whether you have been a smoker. If you are smoker you must stop or you are wasting time and money trying to improve.
