My 8 and a half year old Rabbit has a lung infection. I have brought him into the house. Any advice?
February 19th, 2010 | by admin |He has been to the vet and given an injection of anti biotics and anti biotic drops. He is moving about ok but not eating. I was told by the vet that he would probably go downhill fast but he seems more perky today but still not eating, only nibbling on a tiny amount of veggies Anyone got any advice?
If your rabbit is on antibiotics your vet should of given you some pro-biotics aswell. Rabbits have very sensitive tummys and the antibiotics can upset the gut flora. Ask your vet for some Bio-Lapsis.
Its good he’s eating a little bit, if he stops completely he’ll need to see a vet straight away, If he’s nibbling a little bit of veg it might be an idea to suppliment this with some syringe feed such as critical care.
As already said make sure your bunny is kept warm and that water is in easy reach.

wait another day or two and see if he or she is still not eating. If it doesn’t call/see your vet again.

the main thing is that you keep him warm and you syringe feed food into him. you can get a cryticalcare formula from your vets and also you can feed vegetable jar baby food as it is full of vitamins. also syringe water so he does not dehydrate.
if his breathing starts to worsten get him back to te vet straight away as rabbits go downhill fast
Edit:
i just noticed what poodle power says about pineapple juice.
In my experience it acts more as a laxitive and can cause severe stomach upsets if given too much. Pinapple juice is more for getting rid of blockages not for a rabbit who won’t eat.

Tillyshu has given good advice. I always find hippo stage 1 tender carrot and potato baby food is best to syringe feed. The stuff you get from the vet can be hard and messy to use. The longer rabbits don’t eat the hard it can to get them started. 2 ml syringes are best anything bigger is to much for there month. It is also important you make sure he drinks water and i always give mine pineapple juice as it is very good for there tummy. This i was advcie by my vet and they seem to like it. They only need about a couple of mls a few times a day.
