To those moms whose babies had SRV?
February 23rd, 2010 | by admin |How did u know ur baby had it?
My baby seems to have a cold, runny nose, coughing and sneezing sometimes..
I just read in babycenter.com and will quote something that made me scared:
My baby has cold symptoms. Could it be RSV?
Maybe. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infects most children sooner or later (usually before the age of 2). It often starts out with cold symptoms. In fact, for many babies and young children, the virus is no more troublesome than a cold.
For a few, though, mild cold symptoms (such as a runny nose, a minor cough, and a low fever) develop into a more pronounced cough, labored breathing, and sometimes wheezing. Your baby may also be irritable and restless and have a poor appetite.
It’s important to call the doctor if you think your baby may have RSV, because the virus is the most common cause of two lung disorders in babies, bronchiolitis (which swells the small airways and fills them with mucus, blocking airflow) and pneumonia (an infection and inflammation of the lungs). Either of these conditions can be dangerous — even deadly — for babies, particularly those younger than 6 months.
RSV can also lead to ear infections.
Deadly?
I need to know if my son has/will have SRV asap!
Help!
I just wanted to add that my baby is 4 months old.
My son got RSV a couple months ago (at 18 months old).
He had a runny nose with a cough and a 104º fever.
I immediately took him to the ER (it was 2am) when I noticed he was breathing heavy.
It DID look like an ordinary cold, the only thing that worried me was the heavy breathing. He had been sleeping for about 2 hrs. and he was breathing extremely heavy, like he had just ran a marathon.
When I took him to the ER they said that his oxygen levels were a little low and they gave him oxygen (from a Nebulizer) and we stayed there for about 4 hrs. until they got his temperature down.
I was given a Nebulizer to bring home, and instructions to keep his fever down by giving him Infant Tylenol and Infant Motrin.
He was over the RSV within a week.
His Doctor told me that *most* babies will get RSV before the age of 2 and not even know it, they will brush it off as a ‘common cold’. It’s NOT dangerous if it’s detected early and treated. It’s only dangerous if you ignore the symptoms and they get worse and worse ..
My friends son is the one who gave it to my son (he’s 6 days older than my son) and she did NOT take her son to the Doctor (even though I literally begged her to) .. her son DID end up getting Pneumonia and water on his right lung.
He was given shots in the leg and some medication. He’s fine now.
RSV is common and not dangerous if it’s treated properly.
Just make an appointment with your child’s Doctor as soon as possible so they can do the RSV test (it’s a nose swab).

My son had it at 8 weeks….(born 12/4/08)…I found out through a sputum sample in the ER. It seemed like a bad cold to me…and for most babies it is. If he never had a sputum sample I would have just assumed it was a cold.
My son’s first symptom: cough…followed the next day by lots of congestion/more coughing, lessened appetite…very hard to tell apart from a cold. At 4 months RSV is not as dangerous than to children 0-3 months.

If you want to know, take the child to the doctor in the morning. Sheesh! I don’t have a medical degree and even if I did, I cannot make a diagnosis over a computer. I’m not Gregory House here!

My older son had RSV at 4 1/2 months. We knew something was very wrong w/him, his ‘cold’ got really bad really quickly. If you feel that your babies symptoms are severe, bring him to the doctor or hospital.
