what is the long term outlook on someone who has copd and coronary heart disease?
November 9th, 2009 | by admin |
The blood circulatory system consists of coronary circulation, pulmonary circulation and systemic circulation. If one branch of circulatory system fails, the other two systems will also fail.
About 50% of COPD patients die within 10 yr of diagnosis.
Possible Complications of COPD:-
* Irregular heart beats (arrhythmias)
* Need for breathing machine and oxygen therapy
* Right-sided heart failure or cor pulmonale (heart swelling and heart failure due to chronic lung disease)
* Pneumonia
* Pneumothorax
Possible Complications of Coronary heart disease:-
* Heart attack
* Heart failure
* Unstable angina
* Sudden death

Obviously they are both conditions which can affect life expectancy. In addition, the copd may put further strain on an already struggling heart.
You should talk this over with the doctors to see whether there are any suitable treatments for the heart disease.
You should attempt to avoid chest infections whereever possible and get urgent medical treatment if one starts up.
Eat a healthy diet, be active within the limits of the medical conditions and enjoy life as much as possible.
