Recently I have been experiencing shortness of breath, and I am only 28 and I dont smoke…?

October 25th, 2009 | by admin |

It comes and goes throughtout the day, but it is becoming really annoying to me that I am scared to have conversations with people in the fear that I will lose my breath just talking to them. Any idea what this could be?

I have never had asthma nor have I ever smoked, but I have heard of a condition known as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.
I am not overweight, im 5’10 155lbs, but I do work around pollution and other things at my job. I guess I just wanted to be sure this was something serious. I will schedule an appointment with a doctor tommorow.

It sounds like a lung restriction. Possibly asthma, do your self a favor and see a Doctor. It isn’t pretty having a full blown attack and not have an inhaler. Trust me on this one.

How often/do you ever work out? It could be a simple heart/overall health issue. Try jogging several times a week to build stamina.

You need to have a physical including a treadmill test. It could be your heart.

Please go to your doctor and describe your systems to her. There may be many underlying causes for your shortness of breath but you can’t get answers this way. Please don’t wait. You are too young to have this worry and it may be easy to manage with proper care. Go Now! l

Unbelievable. Why do people keep asking medical questions on here, and expect to get expert answers!

Go to a doctor and get a proper workup done, instead of trying to self-diagnose what could be a serious condition. I have a friend who was just diagnosed with Grave’s Disease, who was having shortness of breath as one of several symptoms. She could just as well have had asthma, COPD, or a hundred other conditions.

well look at your diet since their is many chemicals that can be a factor to your condition. For example caffeine can make you have shortness of breath depending on the quantity, also it could be an allergic reaction. Since many allergic reactions may come later in life since you don’t expose yourself to it as much. Like i used to be allergic to dogs since I am not around them that much, but now i have a dog and I am no longer allergic to it. And if I knew more about you it could be a psycological stimuli or condition. well that’s all for now.

Are you overweight? Do you live in a polluted city? Have you lived around smokers? Do you work in a factory around chemicals? There could be many reasons. Seek professional help. Ask for a pulmonary function test. You get in this little car like box and you"re air intake and output is measured. If you are having problems just talking I suggest you do this asap. When you truly lose you’re air, as I have experienced more times than I care to count you will understand the need to have a fast acting inhaler always with you. I also suggest a TB test. Have you visited any foreign countries? Or are you from one? There are so many possibilities on this one. Another thought is allergies. So do you see why you should consult a physician? Best wishes!

Start eating 2 to 3 raw garlic flakes cut into small pieces and gulp them with hot water before breakfast daily. Take one table-spoon honey twice a day. Eat 30 raisins daily. Cut down on your fast food, hot and spicy stuff, non-vegetarian food, aerated cold drinks, ice cream, alcohol, tea and coffee. Inhale steam thrice a day. Get rid of your frequent cough and cold. Eat plenty of fruits and salad. Drink fruit juices and plenty of water. Inhale air and hold it for some time and then release. repeat this exercise as and when suitable. Walk in garden to get fresh oxygen. Brisk walking is also advisable. If you are obese, reduce weight. Avoid constipation. Take an ECG to confirm heart condition. Take care and be in good health.

COPD is usually associated with chronic bronchitis a thing you don’t say you have. Some heavy pollutant inhalation might cause pulmonary problems or it could be cardiac arrythmias or anxiety.

Shortness of breath is a frequent complain. There are many causes possible.

It could be something really benign, such as panic attacks. The lung could be affected. Asthma, pneumonia, restrictive lung disease, etc… . The answer may come from the heart too (angina pectoris equivalent).

COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is unlikely. COPD develops from smoking for many year and is found on people > 40- >50 years, unless it is a genetic disease but very very rare.

In short, I cannot tell what you have, and I even cannot tell if it’s dangerous or not. The only way to know it is to be evaluated by a doctor.

It could be many different things. Your doctor will have to do tests, such as lung x-ray and pulmonary tests to make a determination and to rule things out.

I had similar symptoms, it turned out to be pulmonary hypertension. that is increased pressure in the right lung. this is also one of the symptoms of sleep apnea.

without reading the other replies to your question… i am now 25 and yes i now smoke… but at the age of 19… pregnant with my daughter… i ended up in the emergency room with breathing difficulties… i didnt smoke i didnt drink i didnt do anything to cause it but… i am now an asthma sufferer all because i decided to get pregnant. I also developed an allergy to cats so yay me!! i would have your Dr. send you in for lung x-rays… READ THE REPORT!!!!! dont depend on your dr to tell you everything (mine never told me, i found out a year later by accident) try using a cool mist humidifier as well… dont mess around with breathing problems… heck it may even be something as simple as anxiety (yes you can have anxiety problems and not know it) Good Luck

see a doctor, but my dad and my brother both have this thing where they can’t catch their breath. they don’t wheeze or anything, but if they try to take a deep breath it catches in their throat half way through. for that i think you need to do deep breathing stuff
