Help, I cant Breath Just quit smoking…. 25 days and counting now this!?

October 21st, 2009 | by admin |

I was a smoker for 12 years (started at age 16); I have been smoke free for 25 days now. The fist 10-15 days no problems felt like I was floating, now I feel like crap. I have this feeling in my chest like I want to cough-up a hair ball, I have dry cough, at times I do cough-up some mucus (clear), tightness/tingling in my chest, and I cant get a deep enough breath, post-nasal drip, my chest is sore, it hurts when I breath-in deep, it is to say the least unbearable. I did have asthma when I was a child; it went dormant now it’s back again. I went to the ER today; they did an x-ray, blood work, EKG the works! Thank God nothing wrong (no tumor, no emphysema, no fluid in the lungs, no blood cloth, no heart attack, etc). So with all that eliminated what do I have? Is this a cleansing phase, or is it; Lymphangioleiomyomatosis, Chylous effusions, Dyspnea, Hemoptysis, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), chronic bronchitis??? The inhaler only works for 30 MINS. HELP!

This will go away. I too was a smoker for 20 years and stopped with the help of patches. Before I stopped smoking I myself developed asthma (so I had to stop), but as time went own it got worse, and now I have severe asthma (Family History though). It is going to take a long while for all the poisons to get out of your system it just don’t happen in a few days, you smoked for 12 years that is 12 years of poisons in your system. I have been smoke free for 3 years and still have episodes of all this, but it does get better. And Congratulations on becoming a non-smoker you will live a much healthier life. Oh, get plenty of exercise that will help too.

I smoke, terrible terrible, anyhow, I was sick a few weeks ago, could not talk at all, coughing without coughing anything up, etc. I did not smoke during this, besides for a couple times, and the weird thing is that after I would smoke I would feel better, my sore throat would go away, I’d get my voice back. Based on that I’m guessing you are going through some sort of withdrawal, like, if you would smoke a cigarette it may make you actually breathe easier… but PLEASE DON’T, I think it is great you have lasted this long. I’m cutting down myself, it isn’t easy but it’ll be worth it. Btw, I started at 16 as well, and have smoked for 13 years, so we have probably the same level of addictiveness.

If it is that bad, maybe do a search for American Lung Association, for whatever state you live in, and see if they have a helpline. Maybe they’d be able to tell by your symptoms if what you are going through is due to withdrawals? Wish you well.
