My doctor found a spot called a pulmonary nodule on my lung that may or may not be cancerous. Im worried that it is. What are my chances of surviving lung cancer? I am 19 years old and have been smoking for 5 years. I know emphazema runs in my family but im not too sure about lung cancer. Can someone please help me?

Most pulmonary nodules are benign, meaning it isn’t cancerous. However there is a chance it could be malignant. I suppose the good news (other than it moree liekly being benign) is that it has been found early. Lung cancer is hard to treat radically (intent to cure), however it can be done. Being young, you are a good candidate for surgery to remove it if it is in a good position. You would also be fit enough to have chemotherapy, so if it is malignant it can be treated. But don’t worry yourself about it, don’t keep thinking on how it could be cancerous. And I suggest quitting smoking, but it is a personal choice.

My husband will be getting surgery on his right lung to remove a loculated pleural effusion. Does anyone know how long he can expect to have to stay in the hospital after surgery and how long before he is back on his feet? I can’t seem to find any information on the recovery time’s.

he will probably need to be on the ventilator during surgery, he shouldn’t remember much about it, providing he comes off it with no problems as most do, sometimes it takes a few tries before they can come off it. ask doctors for anxiety medicine if he is fearful of this, they will relax him throughout and he’ll be fine. i was in hospital for 7 days for lung biopsy, they told me the norm was 4 days. i personally found it to be harder than abdominal surgery, but easier to deal with once the drainage stuff is taken out 2 to 3 days after surgery, may be leakage for a while afterwards, had to keep a cushion behind me for 2 weeks after surgery.. if mostly clear it’s normal, he will be very very sore, but the more he moves the sooner he moves, the faster he will feel better, propping or supporting with pillows a certain way helps too. he could get dizzy suddenly at first, and must not be too prideful about having someone walk with him to the restroom at first. this will ease off. the nurses should be able to advise on all this more. if either of you have any questions write them down and forcefully demand the doctors take time to answer you. they do like to say a few sentences and run, but they get paid enough to explain fully to us. i’ve been through many surgeries. this lung biopsy was the hardest for me to recover from, of course i’m older now, and not in wonderful health. they went in through my back and side also, incision site probably makes a difference too. give himself time to recover. tell him not to be shy about the pain medicine the first 2 or 3 days and to use his little breathy coughy thing a lot to help clear his lungs, which will be gunky at first. low grade fever is normal right after surgery as well. feel welcome to write me if you have any other questions. i may or may not be able to help or advise. good wishes.

I am 17 and my father has Emphysema I want to know what can he do to get on the lung transplant list as soon as possible because the medication for emphysema cause damage to the kidneys, heart and other organs. Which obviously lowers his chance to get the lungs. He has stopped smoking cold turkey. Please be as detailed and simple as possible I know that is a contradiction but remember I am 17 and just want to help my dad see my littlest brothers graduation.

I am sorry to hear about your fathers condition. To get a lung transplant he must be in the last stages of emphysema or COPD. Some risks include your father’s body rejecting this donor’s lung. Sometimes doctors do a heart transplant with the 2 lungs depending on each patient.
You will need to carry a cell phone so when a lung becomes available they can reach u ASAP. . Donors are matched carefully for size, tissue type, and some other factors.Sometimes a healthy family member can donate a lung if you only need a single transplant. The stay in the hospital is about a week recovery time…and the surgery itself takes 4-6 hours for 1 lung or 6+ for both. Unfortunately you can not sign up for a lung online. Your father needs to be referred by his doctor. Surgery is not always the best option. Medication can help- as well as modifications of health habits. It is great that he has stopped smoking.

My lung cancer surgery (which was successful) was just over a year ago (I just posted about scar tissue pain) and have developed two types of abnormal heart beats recently and continue with shortness of breath which is getting worse. Just trying to come up with explanations so I can stop "bugging" my doctors. Lung doctor suggest cardiac problems but it does not appear that way. I am waiting on results of a stress test and echo.

The circulatory system consists of systemic circulation, pulmonary circulation and coronary circulation. If one part of the circulatory system is affected, the other two parts of the circulatory system will bound to fail immediately or later.
Only the pulmonologist/ cardiologist can say about the prognosis of the disease with reference to your medical records.

You need to increase you cardiovascular capacity. They only way to do that is through training. There is no easy way.
