87.6% survive 1 year post-op, 68.3% 3 yrs. out, 51.6% 5 yrs. out and 25.6% 10 yrs. out. A double lung works better than a single lung procedure in terms of long-term survival. A double lung transplant increases survival rates by more than 10 years. Statistics at certain hospitals are better then the national average. The New England Journal of Medicine published an article back in 2007 about lung transplants & survival rates in kids with CF — pretty dismal. The greater successes occur with patients who are not children with CF.

i have hered that some people have to get one double lung transplant, and years later bet another one. so with new lungs do you still have the defective gene in your lungs?

What people don’t understand is that you don’t have defective lungs, you have defective genes. It affects the entire body, not just the lungs, but it is usually the lungs and the digestive system that see the most effects of the disease. When someone with CF receives a transplant they still have the disease, but hopefully they can keep that set of lungs healthy longer with treatments. For example I didn’t start using pulmozyme till I was 8, so I had 8 years of damage there, and did not start taking inhaled antibiotics until I was 13. So all that damage accumulated. So now if I got a new set of lungs, I could start using those medications right away, and hopefully be able to keep them in good shape, but if the disease is too powerful, then another set of lungs might be needed.

My medical knowledge would say 2 surgeries since too many things can go wrong with a transplant, but at the same time extra surgeries are not recommended either. So, is a double lung transplant done in only one surgery or do they do it in two separate surgeries?

When a person needs a double lung transplant — it is virtually always done in one surgery. Often, the surgery is referred to as a bi-lateral lung transplant — because each lung is transplanted individually/separately… Often this can eliminate the need for profusion ("heart lung machine") because they can remove and replace one lung, while the other is keeping you alive — then when the new lung is working, they remove and replace the second lung.

Some diseases, like initial transplants for cystic fibrosis patients, require two lungs because they cannot afford to keep a CF diseased lung with the usual rampant infections in a newly immunosuppressed body. Younger patients will also often receive double lung transplants. However, many people with certain diseases can lead long, happy, productive lives with just one lung replaced…

I have CF and I had a double lung transplant just over 9 years ago.

i got a lung transplant and im drinking but not all the time only like 5 times a month, is that bad with all that medication i taking?

I had a lung transplant almost 3 year ago (due to Cystic Fibrosis) and my docs strongly discourage drinking alcohol as it has an impact to most of the medications prescribed for rejection control. It can affect the levels of the medication in your blood and how quickly your body uses the meds, which may be more or less than what you need. Also remember that with your suppressed immune system your body is more susceptible to damage from external influences.

You should talk to your doctors and your pharmacist about the impact of your alcohol consumption on your specific drug regimen. You need to be completely honest with them regarding the frequency and quantity or they won’t be able to provide you with the most accurate answer. In your first year your body is undergoing a number of ‘adjustments’ from your transplant so the direction provided by your medical team may change occasionally as time goes on. Keep the lines of communication with them open…not being completely honest about your activities and issues will only serve to limit the amount of time you have in your ‘new’ life.

Best wishes.

If they have had a lung transplant and continue smoking do you think they should be allowed another lung transplant if they need one?

no absolutely not. I"m amazed that they even got one in the first place. There are people out there who are dying (litterally) for a healthy lung, and would treat it like a gift, not smoke and see how quickly they can destroy it again. In fact, i think if doctors discover that the person has been smoking and this has caused them to need another transplant, they will be denied.

My uncle had a lung transplant 5 years ago and he is now going down hill. I dont know too much on his condition but they say he isnt going to get better. His body is becoming immuned to the medication for rejection, the other day his wife came home and found him in a ball on the floor and had urinated all over himself. My question is how long does he probably have?? I havent seen him for 15 years and would really like to try to fly in and see him before something happens.

I would say, make your plans now. The average life span of someone who’s had a lung transplant is about five years. Go see him.
